It has been a solid eight months since my last status-update. At the time, I bumped the progress bar up to 60 percent. Now, I took it to eighty because—well—because we've added more stuff to the wiki.

I'll start with the changes I made. My most recent accomplishment is that I "finished" digitizing The biological instability of social equilibria. You can safely say that this article's digitization has taken a while. It started last year, on November 6, transcribing it by hand if memory serves. I did find some assorted versions among the copies of all the old floppy disks, but none of them matches the print version that was published as a chapter in Van der Dennen's Evolutionary perspectives on competition, cooperation, violence and warfare. Then, nothing happened for a while because I was easily discouraged from copying everything by hand as I had done before. Eventually, Popko asked Hans van der Dennen if maybe he still had a digital version that did match. He didn't, but he sent us a few decent OCR scan instead. Throughout July and August I copy pasted the rest of the text from the scans and made the usal efforts to recover the layout in the wiki version. But, I stalled a bit on the figures. I finally added them on the 13th and 14th of November. I eventually had to recreate them all in a vector program, because, like before, my attempts to scan them turned out like shit.

Something both me and Baby Boy spent some time on is begging you for money, the idea behind this being that your money will enable the Foundation to do interesting things (I guess). Throw us a dime and see what happens.

Baby Boy has done a lot of other things. Remember that back in March I announced that he was working on some interesting book reviews? Well, they're here. I hope that, indeed, they've turned out to be interesting:

Comments on Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth, awakening to your life's purpose

Comments on Kris Verburgh's Fantastisch! (Fantastic, about the universe in our head)

Also, the page about the wiki's purpose has been improved and extended, including links to three new pages with more in-depth explanations.

I want to close this transmission by telling you about the most interesting addition that Baby Boy has made since the last status update: Eating from the Forbidden Fruit is a draft for a new article that has never been published anywhere before. Enjoy.

Towards the end of January, I had done the bulk of the work on adding Towards a Cognition-Energy-Learning Mode to the wiki. So it was about time to finish the job. This also means I now get to up the progress bar from 37 to 60 percent. That'll make me smile any day, even at 5 am in the morning.

You must love the ASCII-art tables, some of which I managed to restore from the source documents:

Oh. Wiki-user Baby Boy is working on some book reviews from the Omega perspective. I'll keep you posted on what happens in that area.

For the rest, I only performed some minor house-keeping tasks. Nothing interesting there.

Those of you who are following this weblog know that some of the academic meat of the Point Omega Research can already be found on our wiki. Wiki is an Hawaiian word meaning quick (because editing a wiki is quick and easy). Quick and easy… I'm afraid this quickness doesn't apply to digitizing figures or converting and reformatting ancient WordPerfect 4.2 text files. (On the upside, actually having the original text files now means that at least I won't have to manually transcribe entire manuscripts again.)

On this blog, we've been keeping a progress bar to register how much of Popko's research has been added to the wiki so far. In the six months since my last progress report, it gradually changed from 12 to 21 percent. Now, after a rush of recent changes, I've bumped it up to 37 percent. So, what changes happened during the last 6 months?

The information about the subject and the scope of the wiki has been extended and improved.

Baby Boy has managed to given a taste to the disclaimer that's even more alarming. (Interesting excerpt: We do not accept responsibility for loss of mind and soul.) Congratulations, Baby Boy! I had no idea that I ran the risk of losing my soul while working on the wiki.

It's not just meta information which we added, though. There's actual research and research implications too. Most interesting is perhaps a summary of point omega. Go read it now!

At Point Omega, enlightenment will manifest on a massive, global scale. What enlightenment does and does not entail is the subject of another article.

Today, to justify a progress jump of 16 percent, I finished formatting a copy of the second complete scientific publication which we republished on the wiki. After many hours of alternating between editing vectors and editing the wiki text, this copy now has all the proper layout with figures and tables included. The original is a draft which has been published in the Heymansbulletin of the State University Groningen with a familiarly longish title: Energy and Strokes: how the quality of social relationships influences the process of learning and individual development. In the copy on the wiki, someone is also working on improving the sometimes shabby English of the original article.

While I was redoing one of the figures in Inkscape, my vector editor, I thought it'd be nice to add some colour to it.

If we will continue progress at this pace, we might even finish making our prediction before the predicted takes place.

Tonight, we welcomed a new writer who will contribute to this blog. Halfgaar (an on-line alias which would translate to as much as "half-baked" in English) is a passionate engineer who builds software, audio equipment and 3D models for fun. Some software he builds also for money. That's what his bachelor degree is for. When he's not busy building or learning something new, he often publishes his knowledge or his newest creations on his personal website or elsewhere on the web.

For us, he'll probably write about anything he knows relating to awareness. Maybe he'll share some of his knowledge about and experience with the awareness changes which are induced by binaural beats. Or, he might offer his insight in many social and political issues—insights which might surprise you but which he'll be sure to support with strong arguments. And, he's always open to your arguments as well, as long as they're well-reasoned and logical.

Someone added a General disclaimer (which I personally think may be just a tad extreme). An excerpt:

This site may cause severe cases of cognitive dissonance and possibly psychotic states.

Taking note of the information of this site may cause irreparable disruption of your social life.

Suuuure… Psychotic states, you say? Maybe, if I have to transcribe another one of these lengthy articles.

The same someone also added something of an About page. It's not much yet, but it's a start.

And, of course, in case anyone would forget, an article on The significance of the Point Omega transition.

Myself, I finally finished transcribing The evolutionary stability of a bi-stable system of emotions and motivations in species with an open-ended capacity for learning (a lengthy name for a lengthy article). For months the article sported a notice:

This text is in the process of being copied over from paper. Please be patient while this monkey is typing text.

Typing the monkey did. And figuring out how to do Harvard citations somewhat correctly using MediaWiki (the software running the Wiki). And painstakingly redoing figures using Inkscape and The Gimp.

Complex figures and tables such as this figure took me quite some time to copy, even with the help of Inscape and The Gimp.

The notice is gone and I've bumped the Research On-line progress bar up from 9 to 12%.

Currently, the collective behaviors of the human animal are directed towards large scale destruction and catastrophe. At the same time, there's a growing group of people who are more or less aware of our world's problems and the dangerous straight-jacket of our Mother Culture. The Omega Point theory, then, states that most of the misery and misfortune that has so direly affected the human species for the last ten thousand years has been brought upon us by biological and social mechanisms which are, one by one, all on the verge of collapse. Due to the on-going collapse of these mechanisms, more and more people are freeing themselves from the repressive straight-jacket of our Mother Culture. Knowingly or unknowingly, these self-actualizers are infecting others, some of whom, in turn, also manage to get free from our culture's destructive ideals. The Omega point, then, is a tipping point situated in humanity's near future when enough people have been freed to cause a large-scale shift in any other direction.

If this sounds an awful lot like the New Age predicted by many of our not so very scientific thinkers, that would be because some of the ideas are indeed very similar. We, of the Omega Research Foundation, predict that, indeed, we will be entering a new age within the coming decade or so. What makes our claims unique—no, even explosive—is that we back our claims with a mechanical world view. And even though we disagree among ourselves whether a mechanical world view is any way correct, we realize that the only manner to practice science is by making your claims verifiable. By refraining from waxing on about fun but vague subjects such as astrology, tarot and intuition beyond the scientific realm, we believe we can offer some real, solid insight into where we are and where we're going as a species.

And we have a lot of good news! So keep an eye on this blog and your eyes might yet be opened.
